First Press Release

Let’s go! The Euromoot will start on July 27th for some 5000 Rangers and Rovers of the UIGSE- FSE (Union Internationale des Guides et Scouts d’Europe – Fédération du Scoutisme Européen). It will end on August 3rd in Rome with a meeting with the Holy Father.

From next July 27th to August 3rd, Italy and Rome will become the centre of the Euromoot, gathering some 5000 Rangers and Rovers of Europe, coming from more than 20 countries. They will gather in the Eternal City for an audience with Pope Francis.
In scout jargon, the word Euromoot means an international gathering of Rangers and Rovers (young girls and boys aged between 16 and 21). This event will give the opportunity to several thousands of young people coming from different countries to meet and to create bonds of personal friendship, during activities based on mutual meeting, and to rediscover their common cultural and spiritual roots. During the week of walking, day after day, they will discover that the true European legacy is the capacity to live together in peace and brotherhood around a common aim, Christ.
This important week will include three phases: from July 27th to August 1st, a “mobile camp”; on August 1st and 2nd, four gathering points at the entrance of the capital; and finally, on August 3rd the final destination: Rome and Saint-Peter’s Basilica.
As regards the first phase, young people have had the possibility to come in touch with each other during the previous months in order to constitute international twinnings, that is to say groups of 30 to 50 people from 2 or 3 different nationalities who will walk through an Italian region (Umbria, Abruzzi, Toscana or Lazio). These walking communities will walk along historical routes such as the Via Francigena, the Way of Saint-Benedict, the Way of Saint-Francis, or will follow the steps of great saints such as saint Paul, saints Cyril and Methodius, saint Francis of Assisi, saint Benedict of Nursia or saint Catherine of Siena… Apart from the fact that some of them are protectors of Europe, they represent with their life an IDEAL EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW, in the rediscovery of the Christian cultural legacy. Nevertheless, the walk will not only be a physical exercise, on the contrary; the road will imply legs but also spirit, mind and heart. As a matter of fact, twinned groups will go through determined points, where they will have the opportunity to deepen subjects leading them to ask them-selves about their identity of European and Christian citizens and to rediscover the value of the Word of God through an activity evoking the former exercises of the Benedictine copyists: “the mobile Scriptorium”.
For the second phase, the young people will converge towards four determined points in groups of around 1200. It will be for Rangers and Rovers the occasion to make mutual discoveries of traditions and characteristics of each nation, to attend historical and spiritual conferences and, in thematic groups, to learn new competences, from singing to the protection of the world as a gift of God, or even scout techniques for life in the open air. In a word, meeting points where it will be possible to experience concretely the European dimension!
On August 3rd finally, in Rome, all participants coming from the four gathering points at the entrance of the city will join in the “Aula Nervi” for an audience with His Holiness Pope Francis, 25 years after the audience with Pope Saint John Paul II. Then, all participants will go to Saint-Peter’s Basilica for a final mass presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Bagnasco.
Thanks to the Euromoot, the Scouts of Europe give concrete expression to European fraternity and create a net of friendship and solidarity throughout Europe and beyond.
