THE FIRST SCOUT

Today we are meeting three scouts that came to join us on Euromoot 2019 from Turkey! Serkan, Antuan and Bariş are from a very young scout reality in Anatolia. There are 12 Scouts of Europe in Turkey which means that they sent a strong delegation of three people, from whom we’re sure we can learn a lot! Enjoy the powerful testimony they’re giving!

How did your scouting adventure start?

Sercan – Somehow, I had already practiced scouting by myself before. I used to climb mountains, to do long routes by myself. Since I was a child, I always loved nature. Our ancestors came from nature, but today people are not able to spend even a day in nature and for me it’s a real scandal. We are afraid of bugs, we are afraid of rain, we are afraid of nature, but we come from there. I think we must come back to nature.

How have you met scouts from FSE?

Sercan – Two scouts from Germany went on a pilgrimage to Turkey, they walked a route from Germany to the Way of Saint Paul in Turkey and they visited my church asking for a place for their tent. Our priest invited them inside the church and that’s how we met. We had dinner together and they told me about Scouts of Europe and their mission. I was waiting for something like this and I gave my word to them that one day I would become a scout like them. I had a gift from them, a German scarf, I always have it with me, because it was a moment that changed my life. A year later, a Swiss scout came to my parish and said to our priest: “I have a project for a Turkish boy to set up a group of scouts in Smirne”, so our parish priest called me and said: “Your dream has come true”! Three years ago, I went to Vézelay on my first route, it was very hard, but truly beautiful as well. I never experienced something like this before in my life. In Turkey we have some scouts that are much the same as the rest of society, but we Christians, we are not from this world, we are from heaven and I really recognise that in Scouts of Europe – a lot of prayer and true fraternity.

So you were the first scout in Smirne and you started looking for others to join you? How did it happen that the first group started in your church?

Antuan – I’m not sure what day  it was when he came to the church. We were staying in the city of Ismir and he came to my church. I was a scout in a Turkish scout project and Serkan asked me if I would like to join them, I didn’t hesitate for a long time and I joined them quickly.

And Bariş?

Serkan – He’s my schoolmate. He is also a pianist like me. He plays the piano very well. He is a kind man, very suitable to be a scout.

How did it happen that you decided to come to this Euromoot?

Antuan – Actually, the first proposal came to us when we were in Lithuania, because last year we went to Lithuania for an international training camp. We met Renaud from Belgium and he asked us if we wanted to come to Rome the following year. Of course, we said, we would love to! And it’s beautiful!

What does Europe mean to you?

Sercan – I love Europe very much, because you haven’t lost fraternity, you love each other. Carl Gustav Jung once said that when animals gather together, they become more clever, but when people gather together, they become more stupid. In Scouts of Europe it’s the opposite – people that gather together become stronger. It’s very important, because in scouting we can find our personality in a group. In huge groups, there is a certain danger that personality may be suppressed or ignored, but in Scouts of Europe it’s the opposite. We are all important pieces of the puzzle that are necessary to create one large image.

How is your road so far?

Antuan – Well, actually we don’t know our route because we are twinned with a clan from Venice and they know everything 😊. They are guiding us. For me, it’s a bit difficult because sometimes it’s hard to communicate since we don’t speak Italian, but they are very kind to us and they are helping us a lot. We’re walking only one day, so we haven’t experienced much yet, I think we should wait till the last day to say how our road was.

Serkan – In the reading of yesterday it was written that if you leave your family and friends for Jesus you will find everything you had left doubled and that’s exactly what is happening to us. We found brothers in the Italian rovers, we found a new family in Scouts of Europe.

Why do I serve?

Why do I serve?
Thoughts by a ranger

by Florentina Delgado, former General Guide Commissioner of Spain

On the day of my Guide Promise, I promised “to do my best to serve God, the Church, my country and Europe.” I was still too young, I did not know all that these words implied, and even today, as an adult, I am discovering every day something new about service and the meaning of this promise.
