31 July

"God has put some talents into your hands.
Some of you have heard or will hear the call
to become priests, religious or nuns,
or even lay people committed in the world.
Let Christ guide you and never be afraid
of answering like the young Samuel to serve in the Church!
"

The Scout Prayer and Saint Ignatius of Loyola

By Flory Delgado

Today July 31 we celebrate the memory of San Ignacio de Loyola (1491-1556). Military and then religious, he founded in 1540 the Society of Jesus, of which he was the first general. After living a life of luxury, but also of war and sickness, he retired to do penance and to pray in Montserrat and Manresa (Catalonia, Spain), and then went to Jerusalem as a pilgrim. Back in Spain, he began his studies and devoted himself to preaching.

The Guides and Scouts of Europe can learn a lot from his search of true heroism and his desire for holiness in service and apostolate. We owe him especially the Scout Prayer, which the Venerable Father Jacques Sevin adapted and musicalised for his scouts. We invite you to pray it on the road along with your twinned fires or clans, each of  you in your own language:

Lord Jesus,
Teach us to be generous,
To serve You as You deserve,
To give without stinting,
To fight without care of injuries,
To work without looking for any rest,
To spend ourselves without expecting any reward
Except to know that we fulfil Your holy will.

Why do I serve?

Why do I serve?
Thoughts by a ranger

by Florentina Delgado, former General Guide Commissioner of Spain

On the day of my Guide Promise, I promised “to do my best to serve God, the Church, my country and Europe.” I was still too young, I did not know all that these words implied, and even today, as an adult, I am discovering every day something new about service and the meaning of this promise.
