"When you go back home, in your families, in your communities,
enriched by the experience of these days,
let Jesus’ words re-echo in you: « I am with you always,
to the end of the age” (Mt, 28, 20).
Supported by his grace, try to fulfil your commitment
with a renewed enthusiasm; thus scouting will be for you
« a means of sanctification within the Church »
that will favour and encourage «a more
intimate union between concrete life and your faith ».

Community: various flours for a same bread!

Today, we are at the red point in Selva di Paliano, a natural monument near Frosinone, where rangers and rovers have done very interesting activities. The different clans, in fact, after Mass, lived the experience of the washing of feet which, for pilgrims who arrive at the end of their journey, is synonymous of welcome, as if someone was waiting for them with the house door open. At that time, there were also three rovers from Turkey, which is why Aldo, the leader, wanted to emphasise the importance of washing feet, as a meaning of union and belonging to a single community.

The following activity also wanted to emphasise equality and the importance of living together in the community with the specifics of each component: the scouts had two bowls with two different flours, refined flour and whole wheat flour, and touching them they perceived the differences. Combining the qualities, the peculiarities of each flour, thanks to their coexistence, it was possible to make bread; just as each of us puts personal abilities at the other’s service. The goal of the activity was to make the rovers understand that the Lord calls us to be bread to our neighbour, that we must walk together as brothers and sisters on the road ahead. So, after building an oven and baking the bread, we all tasted together the bread they had prepared. It was good!

The rangers were also the actors of a very interesting activity during which they were in close contact with nature: they lay on the lawn looking at the sky and then, barefooted and with their eyes closed, they listened and heard the ground under their feet. Just as you listen to nature, in the same way you can hear the Word of God that often comes suddenly, like a fresh breeze on a summer day. Precisely with the gifts the Lord has given us, rangers prepared toothpaste, simply made with clay, a few drops of essential oil (mint or lemon), baking soda and water to mix everything. But not only that: with herbs (chamomile, sage, lemon, mint, etc.) they made their own herbal tea. You can play with the various combinations to make many teas with different properties such as relaxing or digestive. Just put the ingredients in empty tea bags, soak them in hot water and that’s it. It’s not that hard to make our favourite toothpaste and herbal tea!
