About Mgr. Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ….
Jean-Claude Hollerich was born on 9 August 1958 in Differdange (Grand Duchy of Luxemburg).
At the end of his theological studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he joined the Company of Jesus in 1981.
After having completed his spiritual formation, he did pastoral work with the Young Christian Students in Luxemburg and the Christian Life Communities. He also taught at the French high school in Luxemburg.
He left for Japan in 1985 and studied the language and the culture during his first stay. Back in Europe in 1989, he completed his theological studies at the Sankt Georgen Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology in Frankfurt, and was ordained a priest in Brussels on April 21, 1990.
From 1990 to 1994, he headed the vocational pastoral in the Grand Duchy, but felt a call back to Japan and went back there in 2002. He made his final Vows in Tokyo in October 2002. An expert in cultural relationships between Europe and the Far East, he taught at Sophia University in Tokyo.
Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Luxemburg in July 2011. He went to the 2013 World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro and learnt Portuguese to prepare this event.
On March 8, 2018, he was elected for six years as President of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), succeeding Cardinal Reinhard Marx.
It is considered a holy city of Christendom: Assisi! As the birthplace of the Franciscan Order, this ancient temple city, which kept its unique character throughout the Middle Ages, attracts pilgrims from all over the world.
