Why do I serve?

Thoughts by a ranger

by Florentina Delgado, former General Guide Commissioner of Spain

On the day of my Guide Promise, I promised “to do my best to serve God, the Church, my country and Europe.” I was still too young, I did not know all that these words implied, and even today, as an adult, I am  discovering every day something new about service and the meaning of this promise.

Why do I serve? Is it just because I promised to do so, and I do not want to be seen as hypocritical? That is pride. Do I serve just to be told what a good person I am? That is vanity. Guides and scouts are very much at the mercy of these temptations: we acquire capabilities, we train for service … we are like superheroes of this current world … but we are frustrated when our forces do not give more, when others have to serve us. And the truth is that, in an act of service, there is both a person who serves and a person who is served. Nobody wants to be the person in need, we show ourselves too vulnerable. However, even Jesus allowed someone else to wash his feet, accepted to be taken by boat, to be invited to the house of Mateo or of Zacchaeus … well, if it is for a party, we will have no problem!

The point is that we forget what is going on just before promising to “do my best to serve”, and it is “with the Grace of God”. The Lord created us out of love and out of love he came into this world, he gave us his message of selfless service, he suffered and died for us. The question is then to love, because God loved us before; to serve, because He served us first. To serve for gratitude, because we will never give back everything that we have received from Him. And to serve with God’s strength, for ours is not enough.

“How much time are you willing to serve? – With God’s grace, forever. ” God is loyal to his promises and does not want less for us. It is more difficult to serve daily those who are close to us (family, work study companions, parishioners …) in little things than to do a great service just once to a total stranger. Let us learn from the perseverance of Jesus: He did not get off the Cross. Will you?

In the Ranger Commitment, we confirm the Promise we made as guides: “To always do my best, to be prepared to give the best of myself, and this, not once, but daily, such is the commitment I want to make.”(extract from the Ranger Commitment).

I would like to finish by sharing with you my ranger motto, hoping that it will be useful to you as it is to me. From a homily of St. John Paul II at Fatima: “Good is silent, the strength of love is expressed in the quiet discretion of daily service”

Lord, make us valid to serve, train those you choose, and keep us persevering in love. Our Lady of the Route, accompany us and give us a humble, pure and generous heart like yours. Amen.
